J. Andrea & Christian Martine Foundation
As we made life-long commitments to one another, so too do we want to see our neighbors thrive. We are excited to offer our time, energy, and gifts in support of our community.
We’ve created this page to share information on how you may organize a similar program, and in time, how we give.
Our Areas of Focus
- Human Rights
1. How have you structured your giving?
We have organized under a donor-advised fund (DAF) with Fidelity Charitable Gift Fund.
2. What is a DAF?
A donor-advised fund, or DAF, is an account held by a public charity. We make contributions directly to the fund and the fund disburses to the non-profit organizations we select.
3. How is a DAF different from a private foundation?
A private foundation is a legal corporation. A DAF operates within a public charity. Through a DAF we may give as we would from a foundation, which is why we’ve elected to use this language in naming our fund.
4. What are the advantages of contributing to a DAF instead of directly to the non-profits we select?
A DAF simplifies the process of making and recording gifts to multiple non-profit organizations. We may make a lump sum gift to the DAF and then direct the DAF to disburse funds to the organizations we select (and invest the remainder). For tax purposes, we only need to worry about contributions to the DAF.
Additionally, a DAF makes it easy to donate an appreciated asset, like stock. The full value of the appreciated asset is added to the DAF and the market value of the asset is tax-deductible. This means you can stretch your dollar further for the organizations you care about.
